This year marks the birth centenary of one of India’s greatest auteurs Satyajit Ray and to celebrate the visionary, Netflix will release an upcoming anthology titled Ray on June 25.
The anthology will have four featurettes based on tales of love, lust, betrayal and truth weaved together by the writings of Ray, which explore multiple shades of each of the characters. Each of the vignettes will be quite distinct in terms of genre and style, while also accentuating its strong emotional core that has been the trademark of Ray’s iconic works.
Here’s what we know of the four short films that make up the upcoming anthology.
Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa
The first episode, directed by Abhishek Chaubey and written by Niren Bhatt, has Manoj Bajpayee and Gajraj Rao in the lead roles. It revolves around Musafir Ali, a popular ghazal singer with a secret past and Baig, an ex-wrestler turned sports journalist, who meet each other on a train journey only to realise later that this isn’t their first meeting. Ali searches for redemption in their satirical tale.
Forget Me Not
Ipsit (Ali Fazal), a charming, cut-throat corporate shark who prides himself on his vivid memory, has a chance encounter with a woman. As he fails to remember her, he begins questioning himself in this thriller, which also has elements of dark comedy. Apart from Ali, the segment also has Shweta Basu Prasad and Anindita Bose. Forget Me Not is directed by Srijit Mukherji and written by Siraj Ahmed.
Bahrupiya
Srijit and Siraj team up again for the third featurette which revolves around a timid make-up artist (Kay Kay Menon), who is stuck at a job he hates and is in a failing relationship. Armed with a book on prosthetics that his grandmother leaves him with, he uses his newfound skills to get back at people who have wronged him. But soon this mask of armour causes his downfall. It also stars Bidita Bag and Dibyendu Bhattacharya.
Spotlight
Harshvarrdhan Kapoor plays Vik, a young actor who becomes popular because of his ‘look’ and decides to get rid of the tag by proving himself. However, his insecurities peak when he sees the captivating Divya Didi. The tale, directed by Vasan Bala and scripted by Niren Bhatt, follows their revelations, commonalities and plight. It also stars Radhika Madan, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Akansha Ranjan Kapoor.
