Ravichandran's Rajendra Ponnappa will be back onscreen this December in the Kannada film, Drishya 2

The film, starring Ravichandran V, Navya Nair, Aarohi Narayan, Asha Sharath, Pramod Shetty and Prabhu, among others, is the remake of the Malayalam film Drishyam 2.

It’s official. The Kannada remake of the Malayalam film Drishyam 2, called Drishya 2 here, is getting a theatrical release this December. The team of the film, including director P Vasu and stars Ravichandran V, Navya Nair and Aarohi Narayan, took to social media to announce the same, although they did not reveal an exact date. Interestingly, the Malayalam original, which had Mohanlal and Meena in the lead, had a direct-to-OTT release in February this year.

Besides being a remake, Drishyam 2 is also a sequel to the 2014 Drishya, and follows events that transpire five years after those of the first installment. Drishya was about the middle-class family of Rajendra Ponnappa, his wife Seetha and two daughters, Sindhu and Shreya, and the accidental murder of Sindhu’s classmate Tarun, who also happened to be the son of the Inspector General of Police, Roopa Chandrashekar. The rest of the narrative was about Rajendra’s extraordinary efforts to protect his family.

In the sequel, the family and the people in the area have moved on from the events of the first film and have almost forgotten the case. Until, of course, new leads emerge that threaten to disrupt the life that Rajendra has built for his family. Can he outsmart the police yet again and keep his family safe?

Beside Ravichandran, Navya and Aarohi, the film also has Asha Sharath, Prabhu and Pramod Shetty in pivotal roles. In fact, Asha is the only actor who has also been a part of the Malayalam original in the same role. The problem with the remakes of Drishyam 2 is that after the success of the first film, which then got remade in pretty much every other language, audiences across the country have been invested in the progression of the storyline and most have already seen the Malayalam film when it came on Amazon Prime. So, it remains to be seen how interested they will be in seeing the Kannada version on the big screen.
