Rani Mukerji’s apprehensions about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Rani revealed that one of the first conversations she had with Karan on set was would the audience like Shah Rukh’s character (Rahul Khanna) falling in love with Rani’s character (Tina Malhotra), because SRK and Kajol were already a hit couple at the time, thanks to their blockbuster hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Rani said that Karan responded to the question, saying, “You don’t worry about it, as long as you are doing the film, you leave that worry to me.”

Rani went on to reveal that Karan was the reason she became part of this film. “He narrated the film with such clarity as if I was literally watching the movie unfold in front of me. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is one of the films that will always remain very close to my heart,” she said.

Chemistry between the three lead characters – SRK, Kajol and Rani

Speaking about the chemistry shared by the three lead actors in the film, Rani said it became possible due to Karan’s script. “Actors perform to the written material. Because Karan’s script was magical, everything fell in place. Also, there was a lot of love that we felt for one another on set that also translated into the shooting process. When I looked at Shah Rukh, there was a lot of love and when he looked at me also, there was a lot of love. Vice-versa for SRK and Kajol as well,” she elaborated.

Released in 1988, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is considered a cult classic. The film recently completed 25 years of its making, and to mark the occasion a special screening was held in Mumbai.
