Rabindranath Tagore’s name is ingrained in Bengali consciousness. Director Palash Dey wanted to bind Tagore's multilayered philosophy in a single stream through four characters – derived from his name. The film's name is Ostad.

The story centres around four characters, Rabi, Indra, Nath, and Thakur. It is based on a novel written by Palash. Rabi wants to build a primary school. Indra is an eccentric who writes poems and songs. He talks to nature. Nath is a salesman who opposes any killing. Thakur is a painter. He thinks that art could not destroy the violence ingrained in man's nature. Gambhira Bhattacharya, Ranajoy Bishnu, Sankar Debnath, and Debesh Roychoudhury played the characters, respectively.

Mrinalini, Kadambari, Bishu, Bhanu Singha, Nandini, and other characters associated with Tagore met the four persons in the story. Sneha Biswas, Amrita Mukherjee, Subhajit Baxy, and Chitrangada Samadder played other roles.

This is Palash's third film after Taranga and Asukhwala. He said he long wished to work on Tagore's life. But why? He said, “There have been several works in Bengali on Tagore's creation. But no work has been done on his philosophy. The thought stemmed from there.” However, Palash said that there will be no Tagore character in the film.

Debajyoti Mishra was the composer and Amar Dutta was the cinematographer. The film was produced by Aurora Films Corporation. Its shooting ended last month. The film will now join the festival circuits all over the world.
