Ramya explains why she chose not to do Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye with Raj B Shetty

Ramya and Raj

Ever since Kannada actress Ramya left cinema in favour of a career in politics, one of the questions that she’s routinely faced is about when she will return to movies. It heightened when she gave up active politics and she also voiced interest in making a comeback. Naturally, when she eventually announced she was coming back, and that too by launching her production house as well, Ramya’s fans were overjoyed. She would produce a film to be written and directed by Raj B Shetty and be paired with him. It sounded exciting, as it came shortly on the heels of Raj’s hit film Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana.

But following the initial excitement, Ramya then said that she’d deliberated further and excused herself from the film, Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye. At the time, she had said that although the role was beautiful and that it pained her to not do it, she felt that it was better suited for a relatively newer face. Raj then cast Siri Ravikumar and Ramya moved on to be a part of Daali Dhananjaya’s gangster flick, Uttarakaanda. Turns out, Ramya’s reason for not doing Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye had nothing to do with the role. The film, as Raj has said, was meant to be a direct-to-OTT release, which a streamer had shown interest in. But Ramya had bigger plans for her comeback and wanted a theatrical release to kick things off, which she clarified in a recent social media post.

Subsequently, though, the platform that had evinced interest in Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye pulled out, forcing the makers to give the film a theatrical release after all. It will have its date with audiences on November 24. The film, meanwhile, is a poignant tale of life lessons exchanged between a counsellor at a palliative care centre and a terminally ill patient and the effect it has on either of them. Also starring Balaji Manohar, Gopalkrishna Deshpande and Sandhya Arekere, the film is a KRG Studios’ presentation.
