Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced To 3 Months In Jail

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is one of the most trending names on the internet over the last few days after announcing the re-release of his cult classic film Satya on the big screen. Since then, the filmmaker has been making news for confessing how he cried while watching the movie. However, while there is celebration, dark clouds of controversy loom over the filmmaker, who has now been sentenced to 3 months in prison by the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai on Tuesday. As per reports, a non-bailable warrant against the Rangeela filmmaker has been issued. Read on to know everything about the same.

Ram Gopal Varma Sentenced to 3 Months in Jail

As per Telangana Today, Ram Gopal Varma was found guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The Act penalizes cheque dishonor due to insufficient funds or exceeding the account’s arranged amount. In addition to serving three months in prison, RGV has also been ordered to pay Rs 3.75 lakh as compensation to the complainant. If the filmmaker fails to pay the said sum, his jail term will be extended by another three months, making it a total of six months.

For the unversed, the case against Ram Gopal Varma was filed in 2018 over a bounced cheque. The complainant, a company named Shree, filed the complaint through Maheshchandra Mishra against RGV's firm. In June 2022, the filmmaker was granted bail on a personal bond with a Rs 5,000 security deposit. The magistrate has clarified that there would be no 'set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure,' as RGV was 'not in custody during the trial.'

Ram Gopal Varma was absent from the hearing, and a detailed judgment on the matter is awaited. However, he reacted to the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
“With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7-year-old case of ₹2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to my ex-employee. My advocates are attending to it, and since the matter is in court, I cannot say anything further.”

The Satya director recently announced that he will be making a film titled Syndicate. Ram Gopal Varma wrote on X: “The film is called SYNDICATE. It’s about a terrifying organization that threatens the very EXISTENCE of INDIA.” He added: “SYNDICATE will be a very SCARY FILM, not due to any supernatural elements, but because it will SCARILY expose what HORRORS HUMAN BEINGS CAN DO.”
