While it was announced earlier this week that the Malayalam film Kho Kho would release only on OTT platform Saina Play for Indian audiences, we now hear that the Rajisha Vijayan-starrer will also be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video soon.

The sports drama, directed by Rahul Riji Nair, was one of the last few Malayalam films to release in theatres before the second wave of COVID-19 forced the shutdown of cinema halls across the country.

The makers had earlier this week confirmed that the film will be streaming from May 27 on Simply South and FilMe for audiences outside India and Saina Play for those in the country. They had also said that they are in talks with a major OTT platform for a later date of release.

A source from that team now tells us that the OTT service that the producers were in discussion with was Amazon Prime Video and the deal has been locked.

The film narrates the story of how a kho kho team is formed in a girls’ high school in an island village. The film has Rajisha playing the coach and Mamitha Baiju as the captain of the team.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the film’s director Rahul shared, “OTT platforms are also looking at it from a business perspective. They are also aiming at films with stars. Kho Kho is getting some attention because it generated positive reviews. Frankly, Kho Kho was made for theatres and a big-screen experience. So, for the digital release, we will have to redesign certain elements such as sound for that platform.”

When asked about the impact of OTTs in the film, the director said, “I believe there will be a lot of changes going forward. Right now, if it isn’t a big film, people think that they can watch it when it releases on OTTs. It will be difficult for that mindset to change, especially because of the current circumstances. Unless it’s a big superstar-driven film, I don’t know how it will affect the industry and that’s the major challenge we are facing.”
