Director KS Ravikumar recently confirmed that Padayappa, the 1999 movie starting Rajinikanth, will re-release soon. The makers made this decision after the rerun of Muthu.
The Tamil film industry had a fantastic 2023 with the back-to-back releases of mammoth blockbusters and content-driven films. Along with the new projects, the industry members also provided the audience a chance to revisit some classic films, by re-releasing them on remastered digital format. Padayappa, the 1999-released Rajinikanth starrer, is the latest film to join this category.
KS Ravikumar confirms Padayappa re-release
For the uninitiated, several highly acclaimed vintage films, including Kamal Haasan’s Nayagan and Aalavandhan, and Rajinikanth’s Muthu were re-released in digital formats, recently. During the re-release event of Muthu, which was held in Chennai recently, director KS Ravikumar confirmed that his 1999-released film Padayappa will also join the bandwagon of re-releases, very soon.
Even though the senior filmmaker refrained from revealing more details about the Padayappa re-release, the reports by the Tamil media suggest that the team is eyeing a January release for the film. The new update on the re-release of one of the most-loved Rajinikanth films of all time has left the fans of the superstar and common audiences, equally excited.
Fans demand a wide re-release
Not just the Tamil audiences, but the cine-goers from other states are also expressing their joy over the re-release of Tamil cinema’s biggest blockbusters. They are now demanding a wide re-release for all the films and are disappointed that most of them were restricted to just Chennai. The film fanatics are hopeful that Padayappa will get re-released at least in all major cities of South India. However, the makers will announce the re-release date and other details only after the remastering works are finished.

All about Padayappa
The 1999-released blockbuster, which features Rajinikanth in the titular role Aaru Padayappan, revolves around the life of the protagonist who succeeds in life after several setbacks. Ramya Krishnan appeared in the iconic antagonist role Nilambari in the film, while late actress Soundarya appeared as the female lead. Legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan appeared in a pivotal role.
Lakshmi, Radha Ravi, Sithara, Nassar, Manivannan, Senthil, Ramesh Khanna, Vadivukkarasi, Sathya Priya, Prakash Raj, Mansoor Ali Khan, Preetha Vijayakumar, Lavanya, Abbas, and others essayed the supporting roles in Padayappa. AR Rahman composed the film’s much-loved music score. The Rajinikanth starrer was originally produced by Arunachala Cine Creations.
