It won't be wrong to say that Raavana Kottam was the most ambitious movie in Shanthnu's career yet. He had pinned a lot of hopes on the movie's commercial success as a major box office hit has eluded him for over a decade now. Being the son of an iconic filmmaker, K Bhagyaraj, landing his debut movie was a cakewalk. He made his debut in 2008 with Sakkarakatti, which was bankrolled by one of the leading producers of Tamil cinema, Kalaprabhu Thanu. And on top of it, Oscar-winner AR Rahman scored the music for the movie. Despite having strong backing and a dream movie launch, Sakkarakatti was bombed at the box office. And Shanthnu has been trying to reinvent himself as an actor/star since. did many movies after that (Sakkarakatti) and I don't know if you would even recognise some of them if I say their names," he had said earlier.
Shanthnu also hoped that his role in Tamil superstar Thalapathy's Vijay's 2021 action drama Master will be a game-changer in his career. He revealed that he shot for the movie for 30 days , which included a fight sequence and a song. To get so much screen time in a movie headlined by one of the biggest movie stars in India would have redefined his career. However, much to his disappointment, most of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, resulting in a mere 12 minutes of screen time in the final version of the film.
Shanthnu openly expressed his disappointment with director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
And Raavana Kottam was the movie that Shanthnu was waiting for the re-launch of his career. It opened in cinemas to mixed reviews and it didn't make any dent at the box office. Shanthanu's performance, however, garnered good reviews.
Written and directed by Vikram Sugumaran, the movie also stars Prabhu and Anandhi in the lead roles.
