Producer Listin Stephen admits that he made a mistake not backing Romancham

The horror comedy starring Soubin Shahir, Arjun Ashokan, and Sajin Gopu is one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2023

Romancham is one of 2023's Malayalam films that managed to draw audiences to theatres. The horror comedy, helmed by debutant Jithu Madhavan, turned out to be one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of 2023. The film had Soubin Shahir, Arjun Ashokan, Sajin Gopu, and several new faces in key roles. The film ended with a hint of a possible sequel.

Now, Listin Stephen, a top Malayalam producer, has admitted that he didn’t like the story of Romancham, which is why he decided not to produce it. Listin also said that he watched the movie twice after its release.

“I watched the preview of Romancham and did not expect it to become such a massive hit. I would have backed it if the story had worked for me. But it didn’t. But I have done what I can for the producer of that film,” Listin told Movie World Media in an interview.

When asked if his judgement as a producer went wrong with Romancham, Listin said, “It is true. I couldn’t judge that film at the time. Some OTT platforms and channels see films before their release, and all of them won’t like certain movies. Sometimes, the content of the film would not suit their platform. I think the same thing happened to me. I watched Romancham twice in the theatre to understand where I went wrong. I think a free mind is very important while watching a movie. As producers, we are often not given that luxury.”

Romancham is the story of a group of friends who live on the outskirts of Bengaluru in a rented house. One day, Jibi (Soubin Shahir) suggests they play with an Ouija Board to summon spirits. However, the situation takes a dramatic turn, leading to restless nights and chilling events. The movie is a horror comedy with hilarious moments and spine-chilling scenes.
