The OTT deal that Priyadarshan’s Hungama 2 has clinched should help calm the nerves of Bollywood producers. Contrary to popular opinion that streaming services only offer big bucks to star-studded movies, the digital rights deal of the upcoming comic caper that doesn’t have any A-listers was bought for a whopping Rs 30 crore.
The figure was let out by Bollywood Hungama, which reported the movie that was made on a budget of Rs 30 crore, has already fetched a profit of Rs 10 crore with its OTT, satellite and audio rights.
A major reason for the mega deal for the film was its hilarious script, according to a source quoted in the report. The movie, which has Paresh Rawal, Shilpa Shetty, Meezan Jaffrey and Pranita Subash along with a cameo by Akshaye Khanna, had completed shooting after the lockdown restrictions were lifted last year.
Last week, in an official statement, the film’s producer Ratan Jain said, “Hungama 2 is a light-hearted film meant to be enjoyed across all age groups, and we feel it will entertain the audiences and bring some cheer in these trying times.”
Meanwhile, Priyadarshan is also awaiting the release of his magnum opus, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, which won this year’s National Award for Best Feature Film. The period film, which has Mohanlal in the lead, is based on the exploits of Kunjali Marakkar IV, who is considered as India’s first naval commander. The film is touted to be the most expensive Malayalam film ever and will be released in several languages including English and Mandarin.
