The film, directed by KS Bava, revolves around a bunch of RAW commandos from the South who are tasked with eliminating ISI covert operatives
With the pandemic slowly subsiding, a lot of big-scale projects that were on the backburner are finally being revived. The biggest and probably the most-anticipated of these in Malayalam is director KS Bava’s spy thriller Karachi ’81, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Tovino Thomas in the lead.
The team on Wednesday shared an update, when the filmmaker posted a photo along with Prithviraj, Tovino and the movie’s producer Anto Joseph that was taken during their recent meeting. This hints that the discussions on the project are on and the film is very much on track.
Karachi ’81 was first announced on January 26, 2020 with Prithviraj sharing a synopsis of the film along with its first look that featured him in an aged avatar. The espionage movies, set in the early 80s, revolve around an elite RAW team from the South that is tasked with eliminating ISI-backed covert forces. The team is led by one of India’s best counter insurgency commandos, after the identities of RAW agents in the north and north west are compromised.
Bava had earlier confirmed that Prithviraj will be seen in multiple get-ups in the movie, which also has Tovino in a pivotal role. The duo had earlier collaborated in movies such as 7th Day, Ennu Ninte Moideen, Lucifer and Ezra. The makers were also planning to rope in top stars from across industries in the big budget film.
While it’s still unclear when the movie will go on floors, Prithviraj has a busy year ahead of him. The actor, who has completed shooting for Theerppu, Jana Gana Mana, Kaduva and Gold, will next resume shooting for Blessy’s Aadujeevitham in Algeria. He is also part of Prabhas’ Salaar, Venu’s Kaappa and Jayan Nambiar’s Vilayath Buddha. The actor will also be acting and directing a web series on biscuit baron Rajan Pillai.
