When Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest, Aadujeevitham released, audiences wondered why the film did not have subtitles throughout its entire run time. Yes, the film had been dubbed in multiple languages for the convenience of viewers, but it is still a practice to include English subtitles, especially for those who prefer to watch a movie in its original version but don’t follow the language.

What Aadujeevitham had was vernacular subtitles for some of the Arabic dialogues, but even these were sparing and did not cover the entire gamut. And there is a lot of spoken Arabic, considering that most of the film takes place in an Arabian desert. This, according to the team, was a creative decision to translate only absolutely pivotal dialogues for the benefit of audiences. The absence of English subtitles, though, was down to a technical glitch, which, Prithviraj has now promised should be rectified latest by tomorrow.

Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) movie review – Prithviraj Sukumaran delivers career best performance; film’s a mixed bag of hits and misses

Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life), directed by National Award winning filmmaker Blessy, is based on a novel by Benyamin, which, in turn, is the true story of Najeeb Muhammed, a migrant labourer, who is tricked into slavery and dumped at a masra to tend to a large flock of sheep and camel. Over the three-and-half-years that Najeeb spent there, he was denied basic human necessities, including food, water, clothes and proper shelter, and eventually makes a daring escape across the desert along with a couple of friends.

The film follows this incredible story of survival, and also stars Jimmy Jean Louis, Robin Das, Gokul RK, Amala Paul, Shobha Mohan, Nazer Karutheni, among others. Since its release on March 28, the film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, with it being hailed as Prithviraj’s career best performance – one that should fetch him a National or State Award, at the least.

Aadujeevitham, which is an AR Rahman musical, should be sent to the Oscars, reckon netizens. The post-theatrical streaming rights have, reportedly been picked up by Disney+ Hotstar, while there are rumours that it could be on multiple platforms eventually.
