The latest Malayalam romantic comedy blockbuster Premalu has started streaming in multiple languages on Disney+Hotstar. Besides its original Malayalam version, the film is available for streaming in Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. In the meantime, the Telugu version of Premalu is available on Aha and OTTplay Premium .
Premalu defied the prevailing trend of short-term theatrical runs for new Malayalam movies. It has become a rare instance to find a movie that has an extended theatrical run amid the growing popularity and influence of OTT platforms.
Especially in the post-pandemic world, streaming services have emerged as a primary source of entertainment for mass audiences. Filmmakers are finding it more and more challenging to whip up spectacle movies that inspire audiences to visit theatres to watch movies, instead of choosing to wait for a few more weeks to watch them in the comfort of their homes.

Premalu's exceptional box office run
Premalu exceeded expectations on the box office front. The movie, starring Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles, didn't generate a lot of excitement before its release. However, the film managed to gain a lot of affection with positive reviews and strong word of mouth.
Premalu became Malayalam cinema's first blockbuster in 2024. Superstar Mohanlal's most-hyped movie Malaikottai Vaaliban was expected to set the box office on fire and end the box office dry spell in Kerala. However, it was a small-budget movie featuring a non-star cast that did the trick.
Premalu is a romantic comedy about two young people from distinct backgrounds. Sachin has a crush on Reenu, who is way out of his league. However, he pursues her against all odds, only to be heartbroken. The film is a mindless comedy entertainer with plenty of laughs to offer.

Not just in Malayalam, Premalu was also a big hit with audiences in the Telugu states. The film's worldwide box office collection is pegged at more than Rs 135 crore.
