Cinematographer-filmmaker Prem Kumar, who made the critically acclaimed film 96, is readying up for the release of his sophomore film Meiyazhagan starring actors Karthi and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles. Ahead of the film’s release on September 27, the director in an exclusive interaction with OTTplay, spoke about the plans he has for sequel of 96. Keep reading to know what the director said.

Prem Kumar on sequel to 96

96 is a romantic drama starring actors Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in the lead roles. The film revolves around two childhood sweethearts who meet at a school reunion and spend time together, before the girl leaves back to Singapore to be with her husband and child. The film was critically appreciated for its performances, writing and music.

In a conversation with OTTplay, when quizzed about the sequel of 96, Prem Kumar said, “Whenever the sequel happens, it will be a proper continuation from the first film. I had initially written the film as a novel, which consisted of six chapters. What you have seen is only half of one of the chapters. If at all the sequel is made, it will be Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha as Ram and Jaanu only. That is how it is written and if made, will be like that only.”

Prem Kumar also said that the chapters will revolve around how these characters evolve over time. “When I started writing, it was one story that excited me more than anything else.” When asked when will we get to see it onscreen, the director said that about 10-15% of writing is yet to be done. “Before I could finish, I wrote Meiyazhagan because this is more achievable. Both Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi are also very busy and are big stars. So, my script too should be on par and impress them as much as 96 did. I will have to serve it properly to them. Hence it might take some time after the release of Meiyazhagan. My wish is to make 96- 2 soon. Hope it happens,” Prem Kumar added.
