Pranaya Vilasam, which has Arjun Ashokan, Anaswara Rajan and Hakkim Shajahan in the lead, is set to drop on ZEE5
While debutant director Nikhil Muraly’s Pranaya Vilasam might not figure in this year’s hits, the film, starring Arjun Ashokan, Anaswara Rajan and Mamitha Baiju, did manage to break-even before the movie’s theatrical release and also move the audience through some poignant scenes.
Ahead of the movie’s OTT release this week, OTTplay caught up with Nikhil to know about the feedback of the film, which hit theatres in February.
“The biggest feedback we got was that the audience could emotionally and genuinely connect well with the film,” he says. “The responses during our theatre visits as well as the messages on social media reflect that people were moved by the film; they tell us about how they could relate to the film’s sequences and compared it with incidents that happened in their lives. A lot of people who liked the movie also watched it multiple times in theatres.”
Pranaya Vilasam explored the different kinds of love and romance that spans generations, and this is what struck a chord with the audiences of different age groups as well. “That was our intention from the beginning and it’s heartening that the audience could understand that beyond what we thought they would. Pranaya Vilasam was most appreciated by women as they believed that it had a feminist perspective too. We didn’t show it loudly but they could read in between the lines,” he says.
The director also explains that the film also prompted a majority of the audience to think about their partners, parents, friends and more. “A lot of people had messaged that the film had moments that made them think about their lives. Similarly, youngsters said they thought about their parents and their lives. So, the film was able to make people contemplate about others, their dreams and thoughts too. All of this feedback came from the heart,” Nikhil adds.
The filmmaker is also hoping that after the movie’s OTT release on ZEE5 on April 14, the movie reaches a larger audience. “I also hope a lot of people will revisit the film to understand the layers better. Also, there’s a section of audience, especially students who couldn’t watch the movie in theatres because school and university exams were on during the week of Pranaya Vilasam’s release. They can watch the movie too once it releases on the streaming platform,” he concludes.
