Prabhudheva's 'Pon Manickavel' headed for Disney+ Hotstar release?

An official announcement for the direct-to-OTT release of Pon Manickavel is expected soon

It looks like more and more Tamil movies are now opting for a direct-to-OTT release considering the current pandemic situation. With OTT platforms garnering a wider audience day by day, the makers of many Kollywood films have found confidence to release their big movies on online streaming platforms.

The latest to join the bandwagon of a direct-to-OTT release seems to be Prabhudheeva’s Pon Manickavel which is most likely to be released on Disney+ Hotstar. The film’s composer D. Imman shared a post by LetsOTT Global on his Twitter page and confirmed that the movie will premiere on Disney+ Hotstar. He even mentioned that the film is scheduled to release in July. The tweet was later removed by the composer.

The deleted tweet read: "#PonManickavel, Coming Soon on Disney+Hotstar! Direct OTT Release! Praise God! (sic)"

Pon Manickavel was slated to be a Pongal release last year but had to be postponed due to financial constraints. It has been speculated for a while now that the Prabhudheeva starrer might skip theatrical release, but no official announcement on the same has been made yet. If the film eventually does release on Disney+ Hotstar, it will be composer D. Imman’s third movie to opt for a direct to OTT release, after Bhoomi and Teddy. Both these films were also released on Disney+ Hotstar.

Pon Manickavel, directed by AC Mugil, is Prabhudheva’s 50th film. Prabhudheva will play the role of ACP Pon Manickavel, appearing as a police character for the first time. Nivetha Pethuraj will play the female lead. Apart from them, the movie also stars Suresh Chandra Menon, Prabhakar, Bijesh and director Mahendran. Pon Manickavel is bankrolled by Nemichand Jhabak Production. Cinematography for the movie will be handled by KG Venkatesh.
