Earlier, he was approached for more or less the same kinds of stories when Thegidi turned out to be a successful venture. "At the end of the day, what matters is how a story is presented. So, I won't be able to say no if I happen to come across a kickass crime thriller," he says.

He has had a few underwhelming movies until some time ago. What is his general approach like when he realizes that a movie for which he's working is being made badly?

Pat comes his reply, "As a matter of ethics, I'll finish the project and try to pull off my role in the best possible way. And then prepare for the worst to happen. It's as if you get ready for a plane crash. You know the damage that's going to happen, and start thinking about the future."

One of his upcoming films includes Blue Star, produced by Pa Ranjith. Set in the 90s, the movie revolves around cricket. Ashok has pinned high hopes on the sports drama.

"It will be a film that cricket lovers are easily going to connect with. It's based on the conflict between two gangs of boys from Arakkonam. It has nostalgia and friendship, I'm sure the audience will be transported to another world," he smiles.

He has lost 10 kilos to play his role in the movie which has been helmed by S Jayakumar. Ashok says that he's equally keen on taking up projects from other languages as well. "I should be able to like the character I play, be it a negative role or a positive one. Languages have never posed a restriction on me. I have done movies in Telugu and Malayalam," he adds.
