Bejoy Nambiar about Por/Dange

Director Bejoy Nambiar’s upcoming bilingual film Por/Dange, a college drama, is all set to make its theatrical debut on March 1. At a recent press meet, the director was asked about his favourite version from his directorial - Por, the Tamil version or Dange, the Hindi version. Quick to respond, the director gave a quirky reply the reporters.

“I am currently promoting Por (Tamil version), hence I would say Tamil was the best. When I go and promote Dange (Hindi version), I will say Hindi was the best over there (laughs)”, the director said.

However, one particular aspect about Por struck director Bejoy, who shared the anecdote with keen interest. “This is me not trying to be biased or anything, but both Por and Dange have turned out very well. However, from a writing perspective, when I was writing the film along with my collaborator Srikanth, who wrote dialogues for Tamil, I do not know why but I found the dialogues had more rhythm in Tamil,” the director explained.

“I used to look at the scenes in both Hindi and Tamil, and found some kind of poetry in Tamil dialogues. And that's not just because of what Srikanth did, but Tamil as a language has that quality in it,” he added. The director revealed when he compared the two versions, he found Tamil dialogues more fascinating and seemed to have a ‘new-found appreciation for the language’.

The story behind the title ‘Por’

When asked about why he had titled the film Por (meaning battle) but was describing the movie as ‘fun and entertaining’, the director shared the story behind his idea of naming the film. Bejoy revealed that while he was assisting Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, he heard someone shouting the word ‘Por Kalam’ (battlefield) at the sets. The word struck with him and he decided to use it in his next film.
