Pookkaalam, which is helmed by Ganesh Raj, also has Basil Joseph, Roshan Mathew and Johny Antony as part of the cast
Aanandham director Ganesh Raj’s sophomore directorial Pookkaalam is set to hit theatres as an Easter release. The movie, which is touted to be feel-good film, has Vijayaraghavan and KPAC Leela in the lead and had been shot mostly after the pandemic.
The film boasts a large star cast apart from the veteran actors who play its lead characters. Vineeth Sreenivasan, Roshan Mathew, Basil Joseph, Johny Antony, Annu Antony, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Jagadish and Abu Salim as part of the cast.
What is Pookkaalam about?
The film revolves around a veteran couple approaching 100 years of age. They have been married for the past 80 years and an incident that happens in their life affects not just them but also those around them.
“For my second film, I wanted to push myself some more. I didn’t know much about the world of Pookkaalam; it’s about much older people and is set against a rural Christian backdrop. I am not even married and because my parents’ jobs were always based in the cities, I have spent most of my time there. So, I wanted to explore this side of life too with this film,” said Ganesh, in an earlier interview with us. The movie is reportedly inspired by a true incident.

Ganesh said he decided to cast Vijayaraghavan for the role because “the kind of effort he puts in for each role is legendary”. Moreover, the character needed someone who was old but could also do a full-length character during the pandemic. KPAC Leela, meanwhile, had been an actress in the 1960s and had previously acted in Jayaraj’s Roudram.
When and where to watch Pookkaalam?
Pookkaalam is set to release in theatres on April 8 as an Easter release. The makers have chosen a Saturday release date for the movie, so it doesn’t lose out of theatres on April 7, which is Good Friday.
