The positive word of mouth and praise from critics have helped Ponniyin Selvan to set the Tamil box office on fire ever since it was released on September 30. The movie has already surpassed a few records like the fastest Tamil film to achieve the 100 crore mark in Tamil Nadu.

The Mani Ratnam directorial has been raking in impressive figures at the overseas markets as well. According to reliable sources, the historical fiction has so far grossed 300 crores from across the world. The film is the second Tamil movie this year to join the elite club after Kamal Haasan's Vikram.

Shankar's 2.0, starring Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar, was arguably the first Kollywood movie to enter the 300 crore club. The film is currently the highest-grossing Tamil movie of all time. All eyes are on Ponniyin Selvan now with regard to emerging as the numero uno Kollywood film.

The hype for the second installment of Ponniyin Selvan is already huge, and film buffs hope that the movie which will release in 2023 will take a gargantuan opening in many territories. Ponniyin Selvan has breached the 100 crore mark in the overseas market as well, with the US contributing significantly.

The distributors of the movie in various territories will laugh all the way to the bank, as it has already achieved breakeven in many places. Though the collection for its Telugu version did not meet the expectations, the Hindi version is slowly, steadily witnessing a jump.

The movie has already outsmarted Vikram's collections in the Hindi market, and the overall collection, too, is poised to outdo the Kamal Haasan-starrer in the long run.
