The single sung by AR Rahman was released at a mall in Chennai this evening
Ponni Nadhi, the first single from Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan: I, was released at a mall today in Chennai amid much fanfare. The song is a tribute to the Cholas and revolves around the Chola Kingdom and Ponni river. The single has lyrics by Ilango Krishnan and is sung by AR Rahman himself, along with AR Raihanah and Bamba Bakya.
Speaking about the song at the single launch, Karthi, who plays Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan, said that when he heard the song it gave him goosebumps as he felt that he was indeed entering the Chola land. “Mani sir has given an opportunity to a new lyricist Ilango Krishnan. The song gives me goosebumps and your presence here in large numbers, is a goosebump-inducing moment,” he said

Jayam Ravi, who plays Arulmozhivarman in the film, stated, ““Your reaction & excitement today for #PonniNadhi validates all the hard work that has gone into this!”
Ponniyin Selvan: I is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s popular novel of the same name. The film revolves around the early days of Arulmozhivarman, who later goes on to become Raja Raja Cholan. The film has an ensemble cast including Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Parthiban and Jayaram to name a few. Cinematography is by Ravi Varman, editing is by Sreekar Prasad and Thota Tharrani has handled the art direction. The film is all set to hit screens on September 30 in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.
Ever since the teaser was released, expectations have soared from the film. It is also one of the most expensive films made till date in Tamil cinema.
