The first single, Ponniyin Nadhi from Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan was launched amid the public at a mall in Chennai today. The single was launched in the presence of Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Jayaram amid much fanfare. Speaking at the event, Jayaram, who plays Azhwarkadiyan Nambi in the film, said that he was glad to be part of the magnum opus. “ I am glad I could be a small part of this magnum opus. Usually when we go for a movie, we get to know its story only after we finish watching it. But when it comes to Ponniyin Selvan, it is a story that’s etched in the hearts of every Tamilian. Everyone knows how each character is and expectations are riding high on the film.”

He added that working on the film was an experience in itself. “We would start at 3am in the morning. I remember, Karthi and Jayam Ravi would have shot for 18 hours and Mani Ratnam sir would say that the next day’s shoot would involve them showing off their bodies. When I would wake up, Karthi and Ravi would be working out. On the other hand, I would be fed a special diet as I needed to have a huge belly for my character. Everyone worked really hard on the film.”

Karthi, called working with Jayaram a great experience and a matter of luck. “There is an interesting facet about Jayaram sir’s character in the film. Azhwrkadiyan Nambi is only 5 feet five inches. Jayaram sir is 6 feet five inches. He has done something interesting to work on the height, which will be revealed later. We three spent the most time together. Ravi and I would be talking about how great an actor Jayaram sir is. ” The film is all set to hit screens on September 30 worldwide.
