The Karnataka Box Office has been highly conducive in the past for Tamil releases, including Ponniyin Selvan 1
Ponniyin Selvan 2 the second instalment of Mani Ratnam's epic saga, released in theatres worldwide on April 28 amid tremendous hype and expectations. Ahead of the release, many expected the film not only yield exceptional results at the box office but also go past the benchmark set by Ponniyin Selvan 1, which released back in September 2022. PS 1 had ended its theatrical run close to the Rs. 500 crores mark and was eventually declared the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year.
PS 2, on the other hand, has begun its box office journey on a great note and according to the popular trade aggregator, the film has grossed close to Rs. 30 crores on Day #1. The original Tamil version has been the biggest contributor for obvious reasons with a share of more than 75% and the Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam dubbed versions, too, performing reasonably well at the box office. The Kannada dubbed version, however, has suffered due to a severely limited release with respect to the number of shows.
That said, the state of Karnataka has proven conducive yet again for big Tamil releases and Ponniyin Selvan 2, too, has leveraged the diverse market. The same trade reports reveal that the film has collected close to Rs. 4.0 crores in Karnataka whereas Kerala and Andhra Pradesh/Telangana have managed only Rs. 2.7 crores and Rs. 2.8 crores respectively. PS 2 boasts a considerably wide release in Karnataka with Bengaluru alone pledging over 650 shows on Day #2 (Saturday). The IMAX shows in Bengaluru have reportedly earned over Rs. 54 lakhs on Day #1.
PS 2 stars Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram and several others. A.R. Rahman is credited as the music composer with Ravi Varman handling cinematography.
And yet, despite all the incredible figures, Ponniyin Selvan 2 fails to make it to the top 10 list of highest opening day grossers in Karnataka, as far as Tamil films are concerned. PS 1 is said to have grossed over Rs. 5.10 crores (in Karnataka) on its first day of release, with Pa Ranjith's Kabali, starring Rajinikanth, taking the top position with Rs. 10.70 crores! According to the Twitter group Karnataka Talkies, the other Tamil films on the list are Shankar's 2.0 (Rs. 8.7 cr), Vijay starrer Beast (Rs. 7 cr), Varisu (Rs. 5.60 cr) and others.
