Ponniyin Selvan 1 has been smashing box office records left, right and centre ever since its release on September 30. The movie helmed by Mani Ratnam recently entered the ₹400 crore club, and is only the third film to attain this feat after Rajinikanth's 2.0 and Kamal Haasan's Vikram.
The period saga has now added another feather to its cap. The movie, bankrolled by Lyca Productions and Madras Talkies, has become the first Kollywood project to gross ₹200 crores only from Tamil Nadu. Vikram's gross collection from the state was a few crores away from the coveted mark.
Now, all eyes are on Ponniyin Selvan's final box office collection. The trade is eagerly looking forward to know if the film would enter the ₹500 crore club, making it the second Tamil movie to do so. The film performed exceptionally in Kerala and some of the OS markets like the US, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia.
Ponniyin Selvan 2 is expected to hit the screens as a summer release in 2023. The makers are likely to announce the release date soon. The OTT premiere of Ponniyin Selvan 1 is expected to happen in the first week of November. Amazon Prime Video had bagged the digital rights of the movie last year.
Some of the movie lovers, who felt that Vikram and Jayam Ravi had limited screen space in the film, are eager to know how the two actors will be presented in the sequel. Karthi's Vanthiyathevan has more scenes in the first part. and makers have ended the movie with a suspense, providing them ample reasons to wait for the next instalment.
AR Rahman's music, Thota Tharrani's set design and Ravi Varman's visuals have been unanimously appreciated by cinephiles apart from the performances of actors.
