Disney+ Hotstar dropped the first look still from the upcoming live-action adaptation of Pinocchio that stars Tom Hanks.
Hanks plays Geppetto, a lonely, childless wood-carver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his own son. In the image, it seems like Geppetto is welcoming Pinocchio to the world after adding the final touches to the puppet boy figure.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his "conscience". Cynthia Erivo is the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key is "Honest" John; Lorraine Bracco is Sofia the Seagull, a new character, and Luke Evans is The Coachman.
The live-action film is a remake of the 1940 animated musical drama of the same name, which was adapted from Carlo Collodi’s children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Robert Zemeckis has directed the film from a screenplay by him and Chris Weitz.
Pinocchio is produced by Zemeckis, Derek Hogue, Andrew Miano, Weitz and Paul Weitz. Jackie Levine, Jack Rapke, Alexandra Derbyshire and Jeremy Johns are the executive producers.
This project is not the first spin on Pinocchio. Lionsgate has Pinocchio: A True Story an animated film with Pauly Shore, this March. Netflix has a stop-motion animated film from Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, which stars Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor and David Bradley.
Disney also has a line-up of other animated classics’ remakes coming out soon including Little Mermaid (May 26, 2023) and Peter Pan & Wendy according to Variety.
Meanwhile, Hanks’ new projects are Elvis, A Man Called Otto and Asteroid City.
Pinocchio will premiere exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar this September.
