Producer Judy Craymer has also hinted at a third instalment of the iconic musical rom-com
Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep
Mamma Mia! 3 is in the offing? Looks like, at least, Pierce Brosnan is praying for it. Featuring an ensemble cast that included Pierce, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgård and Julie Walters, Mamma Mia! The Movie was released in 2008. Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the jukebox musical romantic comedy film was based on the songs of pop group ABBA. Then came Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018, also starring Cher and Lily James.
Cut to now, Pierce has expressed his desire to reunite with his co-star Meryl for a third instalment of the iconic musical rom-com, which was an adaptation of Catherine Johnson’s 1999 book of the same name.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with E! News during a preview of his new art exhibition in Los Angeles recently, the 70-year-old actor said, “Come back, Meryl, any time you like. Please! You’re always in my heart.” Pierce believes that the Oscar-winning actress won’t say no to finishing what he describes as a “franchise trifecta”. In fact, Meryl apparently once told him that “it’s criminal how much fun we’ve had making this movie”.
The Foreigner star thinks that everyone would love to come back to make a third. “There’s such love and joy to it. There’s a story to be told, I’m sure,” the actor added.
Just recently, producer Judy Craymer - who had backed both the stage show and the films - had hinted at another instalment of the beloved musical movie, saying it’s in the “earliest stages”. She told ITV “I don’t want to over-egg it, but I know there’s a trilogy there. There is a story there, and I do think Meryl should come back. And if the script is right, she would, I think, because she really loved playing Donna.”
