Phule: Pratik Gandhi,Patralekhaa to star in biopic on Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule; first look unveiled today

The upcoming biographical film on the Indian reformer, written and directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, was announced today on the 195th birth anniversary of Jyotirao Phule

Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa will star as pioneer Indian social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule in an upcoming biographical film. Titled Phule, the first look of the stars was unveiled today, on the occasion of the 195th birth anniversary of Jyotirao Phule.

The first look poster was unveiled by Pratik on his official social media handles today. It saw him and Patralekhaa donned in the reformers’ familiar attire, with the latter holding a book in hand as well. In the caption of the post, Pratik wrote about how ‘honoured’ he felt in his part in bringing forth Phule’s legacy to the world.

The upcoming film will be written and directed by Ananth Narayan Mahadevan. The filmmaker had won the National Award for penning the script of the Marathi film Mee Sindhutai Sapkal. Phule will be bankrolled under the banners of Content Engineers & Dancing Shiva Productions.

According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Pratik expressed his elation to be a part of the film, which would mark his first biopic. “Even though the challenges are huge, given the fact that he was such an inspirational Indian leader; it’s also a dream role and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

Patralekhaa also talked about how important the subject of the film was to her. She spoke of how the Phules established one of the first indigenously-run school for girls in 1984 Pune. She also talked about the reforms spearheaded by the reformers in facilitating remarriages of widowed women as well.

Phule is slated for release in 2023.
