The opening shot of a scantily clad Sathish and Hariprriya has some praising the bold nature of the content, while others were left shocked.
Kannada filmmaker Vijayaprasad is only two films old and has two others ready for release. Yet, he already has an image in Sandalwood, based on his last release, Neer Dose. Vijayaprasad is seen as the king of adult comedy currently in Kannada cinema. If Neer Dose had an overdose of double entendre, both his upcoming films – Petromax and Thotapuri – are no less, if the trailers are any indication.
The Jaggesh-starrer Thotapuri trailer had released much earlier and while launching it, actor Kiccha Sudeep, who was rolling around and laughing at the content, had said that if he had dared to have the kind of double meaning lines that Jaggesh has in the film, he’d be incessantly trolled. Only Jaggesh, he said, could have such lines in a film and get away with it.
Petromax, which has Sathish Ninasam in the lead, also appears in the same mould and Vijayaprasad is making no bones about it. The trailer that dropped yesterday has audiences divided. While those who enjoy that kind of comedy have been all praise, especially for Hariprriya’s bold avatar, others have said that it is films like Petromax that will be the downfall of the Kannada industry. Mixing obscenity with philosophy doesn’t always work, they felt.
For Hariprriya, Petromax is her second collaboration with Vijayaprasad, while it is the first for Sathish. The actress had played a commercial sex worker in his earlier film Neer Dose, a role that Ramya had walked out of. The story of the film revolves around the lives of four orphans. The film also stars Nagabhushana, Karunya Ram, Arun Kumar, Achyuth Kumar, Vijayalakshmi Singh, Padmaja Rao, Sudha Belawadi, Veena Sundar, Hema Dutt, Mimicri Gopi and Suman Ranganath among others. Anoop Seelin fills in as music director for the film produced by Sathish Picture House, Studio 18 & Petromax Pictures.
