The film was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award 2021 (MSK Trust) for Best Kannada film at the Innovative International Film Festival.
Actor-turned-director Sagar Puranik’s debut directorial is a film that explores one of Karnataka’s popular folk arts - Dollu Kunitha. Called Dollu, the film is the maiden production of filmmaker Pavan Wadeyar and his wife Apeksha, under their Wodeyar films banner. The film, which recently had its first public screening in the USA at the Caleidoscope Indian Film Festival Boston, has just been awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award 2021 (MSK Trust) for Best Kannada film at the Innovative International Film Festival.
Sagar took to social media to announce the same, writing “Namaskara! It's with great pleasure that I wish to inform you that my debut feature film directorial, Dollu, has won Dadasaheb Phalke award 2021 (MSK Trust) for Best Kannada film, in association with Saraswati Pimple foundation at the prestigious Innovative International Film Festival. Thank you to the organisers at the film festival! Feels great to receive the award.”
Meanwhile, it appears that the film is continuing its good showing at film festivals, and is slated to be at the Dhaka International Film Festival as well. “Glad to announce that our film, Dollu, which is also my debut feature film direction, has one of its first official selections in the very prestigious Dhaka International Film Festival in the Cinema of the World section. This year is its 20th edition and we're more than excited to be a part of the festival! We have also received positive responses from a few more festivals from a completely different continent, and hopefully we will be able to share more such news on Dollu! Thank you all for your support! I want to thank my ever-supportive producers Pavan sir and Apeksha ji for this opportunity and the entire team for their effort. This is just the beginning,” Sagar had written at the time.
