Pathu Thala star Gautham Karthik's August 16, 1947 is all set to hit screens on April 7. Ahead of the release, the film's producer AR Murugadoss has penned an open letter to everyone. In the letter, he has asked fellow citizens to not take their freedom for granted. Excerpts from the letter reads, "There were some chapters of the fight against evil that were hidden away from the past. There were some stories of independence that no one dared to tell. The nerve-wracking pain our country had gone through before achieving freedom is beyond brutal. The violent injustice meted out upon our forefathers is gut-wrenching. Despite having been subjected to so much turmoil, our nation marched ahead in the path of development without even expecting an apology."
Talking about the film, the Thuppakki director said in the letter, "August 16, 1947 is an ode to those who selflessly gave their all so that we can breathe free. The moment I heard of these shocking events from a village elder, I realised there is so much about the past that we still don't know. Our mind is trained to not think beyond what we have read in history books. Weaving folklore and reality together, August 16, 1947 was a chapter of independence that touched my heart. And for the sake of our forefathers and our country's history, I thought we must seek an apology for the events of August 16, 1947 from the British!."
The director-producer had reiterated the same during a promotional event for the film. He had also added that the film was initially supposed to be a Tamil release, but he realised soon that it needs to be released on a wider scale.
The film, starring Gautham Karthik, Revathy, Pugazh and others and directed by NS Ponkumar, will release in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, English and Hindi on April 7. August 16, 1947 is produced by A.R. Murugadoss along with Om Prakash Bhatt and Narsiram Choudhary.
