Upon release, the film garnered mixed reviews, thanks to the lacklustre screenplay, predictable climax, lack of wow moments and engaging sequences. What worked for the project was the presence of Silambarasan aka STR, Gautham Karthik's energetic performance and AR Rahman's satisfying score. Farook Basha's cinematography was another aspect which received a thumbs up from viewers.
Pathu Thala is gearing up for its OTT premiere on Amazon Prime in a few hours. The movie might appeal to those who love gangster dramas and over-the-top heroism. Fans of Silambarasan and Rahman are likely to have a gala time watching this film which has decent action choreography by Sakthi Saravanan.
However, STR appears only towards the end of the first half, which left some of his admirers disappointed. Though the makers hinted at this, not many were aware of their favourite star making only an extended cameo of sorts in the movie.
Its story revolves around a gangster who controls Kanyakumari and politics in Tamil Nadu. A cop has been assigned to watch his moves and arrest him to stop his empire from growing further. However, the two join forces and gang up against a veteran politician who has crooked ambitions.
What happens to the trio in the murky scheme of things forms the rest of the story. The makers of Pathu Thala, despite putting their best foot forward, could match the impact of Mufti only to a small extent.
