Silambarasan at the set of Pathu Thala
Director Obeli N Krishna's comeback film in Kollywood, Pathu Thala, had high expectations riding on it ever since the project was announced. Silambarasan playing the lead in the role of a gangster was more than enough to generate hype for the film apart from Gautham Karthik essaying a prominent character.
Priya Bhavani Shankar, Gautham Menon, Teejay Arunsalam, Redin Kingsley and Kalaiyarasan among others essay key roles in the film which has been bankrolled by Gnanavel Raja and Jayantilal Gada under the banners of Studio Green and Pen Studios respectively.
The movie, which hit the screens yesterday, opened to mixed response from critics and audience alike. Silambarasan's screen presence is one of the positive aspects of the film. AR Rahman's background score elevates a few crucial episodes while Farooq J Basha's cinematography, too, impresses.
However, the lack of engaging conflicts, weak villain characterization and slow-paced screenplay which is devoid of innovative ideas stop the movie's prospects from becoming an entertaining fare. The second half offers respite to the audience after a comparatively dull first half.
Pathu Thala, which was released amid good hype, was expected to register the biggest opening in Silambarasan's career. However, the film couldn't surpass his blockbuster Maanaadu which was released in 2021, in terms of collection on day one. According to sources, the film has earned a little less than 7 crores from Tamil Nadu.
