AR Rahman said that it was Parthiban's passion for filmmaking, his ideas and the concept of a one-shot non-linear film that made him score music for Iravin Nizhal
The first single and teaser from R Parthiban's Iravin Nizhal was released last evening. The film brings together Parthiban and AR Rahman for the first time. Interestingly, Parthiban and Rahman were supposed to team up for a film, two decades ago, which didn't materialise. Speaking at the launch, Rahman said that it was Parthiban's passion for filmmaking, his ideas and the concept of a one-shot non-linear film that brought him on board.
Rahman, who recollected that he was supposed to work with the actor-director many years ago, said, "I have known Parthiban for over 25 years now and I know his passion for cinema. We were supposed to team up for a film together titled Elelo, but that didn't materialise. So, when he approached me to score the music for Iravin Nizhal, I wished to be part of it. And when he narrated the story to me, I found it extremely interesting, especially when he said that he was going to shoot the entire film in one shot."
Talking about music part of it, Rahman said, "It's dark and disturbing story and it delves into the concept of karma and destiny. Some believe in it, while some do not. It all depends on what you take back from the film. It was while working on the film that I heard a song by a Siddhar. I loved the lyric and retuned into the song Paavam Seyyadhiru Maname. I told Parthiban that the song would work and he agreed. "
A curious Rahman, who visited the sets to see how the portions were canned, said," When the portions were being rehearsed, he showed me the entire process. As I am learning filmmaking, I looked and observed everything around. The set was more interesting than the film. Usually in films, many shots are cut for flashback portions, transitioned, dissolved et al. Here, everything had to rehearsed, including the placement of camera, lens, music etc. The set was like a mini theatre. Even if one person sneezed on the set, the entire shot had to be redone. The shoot spanned 30-40 days and it was quite interesting to watch it. Finally, when I saw the film, it had turned out way better that what I had seen during the rehearsals. When you too watch the film, you will notice how well he has planned the shots. It was fascinating and I was very happy. "
Rahman added, "We have seen non-linear shots, but to do it in one shot is definitely an achievement. Parthiban has set an example for future generations with Iravin Nizhal. Someone from Tamil Nadu attempting something like this is big and he has proved that we have talent. If this film was made in Europe or America, the whole world would have celebrated it."
