Kunchacko Boban and Rajisha Vijayan’s Pakalum Pathiravum is helmed by Ajai Vasudev
After a lacklustre run at the box office, Malayalam star Kunchacko Boban’s Pakalum Pathiravum is set to release on ZEE5. The movie, which also has Guru Somasundaram, Rajisha Vijayan, Seetha and Manoj KU as part of its cast, is helmed by director Ajai Vasudev and written by Nishad Koya.
Pakalum Pathiravum was initially rumoured to be the remake of the 2018 Kannada thriller Aa Karaala Ratri. The team, however, has credited its writer Dayal Padmanabhan and Mohan Habbu, whose play served as the inspiration for the Kannada movie. But the Malayalam movie also borrowed from NN Pillai’s play Dam, which was also inspired by Rupert Brooke’s English play named Lithuania that was also the base for Aa Karaala Ratri.

Pakalum Pathiravum revolves around a wildlife photographer, who travels from Kochi to Mysore with a mysterious intention. He decides to halt at a village in Wayanad for the night. A family, who are financially struggling, agree to host him but are caught unawares when they discover that the stranger is also carrying a gun and jewellery. Tensions rise as the village is also facing a Maoist threat. What happens during the night forms the plot of the movie.
The film’s OTT rights had been bagged by ZEE5, much before its theatrical release on March 3. The movie’s director Ajai Vasudev, who had earlier helmed movies such as Mammootty’s Masterpiece and Rajadhi Raja, had told us that he was initially in talks with the movie’s producers for a big-budget film, starring Asif Ali and revolving around the media. But the pandemic had delayed the said movie.
The producers then pitched Pakalum Pathiravum to Ajai. “They said that Nishad Koya had an interesting script that Chackochan had already approved of. The movie could also be shot keeping the pandemic restrictions in mind. That’s how I came onboard,” Ajai said.
Pakalum Pathiravum, which wrapped up shoot in 2020, is set to release on ZEE5 and OTTplay Premium on April 28.
