Paappan marks the collaboration of Joshiy and Suresh Gopi after a gap of almost a decade
This year is proving to be a record-setting one for Malayalam’s superstars. After Mammootty and Shaij scored his career’s highest grossing film with Amal Neerad’s Bheeshmaparvam earlier this year and Prithviraj Sukumaran had back-to-back superhits with Jana Gana Mana and Kaduva, Suresh Gopi now seems en route to register his biggest hit with Joshiy’s Paappan.
The movie, which has already earned Rs 13 crore at Kerala box office, has opened to more screens in its second week. From August 5 onwards, the movie has started playing in centres outside the State as well as abroad.
The crime drama, which also has Neeta Pillai, Gokul Suresh, Nyla Suresh, Kaniha and Tini Tom, opened to 250 screens in Kerala on July 29 and has continued to play in all of these theatres in its second week – an achievement in itself aided by the fact that there weren’t any big Malayalam releases this week except for Dulquer Salmaan’s Sita Ramam.
Paappan is now also playing in 132 centres outside the State, along with 108 and 62 screens in the Middle East and USA, respectively, according to a report by Can Channels. The film is expected to break the previous record of Suresh Gopi and Joshiy’s Christian Brothers, which had gone on to rake in Rs 37 Cr at the box office. However, the film, much like Twenty-20, was a multi-starrer that also had Mohanlal in the lead.
Meanwhile, the success of Paappan will bode well for Suresh Gopi’s upcoming films including Jibu Jacob’s Mei Hoom Moosa, which is set to release in September. The actor will also be teaming up with veteran filmmakers Jayaraj and Shaji Kailas later this year. Jayaraj and the superstar will be collaborating on a big-budget thriller Highway 2, which is expected to go on floors by September. The star also has Mathew Thomas’ Ottakomban set to start filming later this month.
