One of the pioneers of Parallel Cinema in India, Girish Kasaravalli has won 14 National Film Awards.
A book about the legendary Indian filmmaker, Girish Kasaravalli, who has extensively worked in Kannada cinema, was released at the ongoing Pune International Film Festival today.
Seer of Contemporary History: Girish Kasaravalli and his Cinema, written by Ganesh Matkari, was launched at the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), as a part of the film festival. Published by the ‘Publication Division’ of the Government of India, the book was released by Kasaravalli.
“Matkari tried to understand the perspectives and ideas of my films. I really liked his approach. I feel more such literature on other filmmakers should also come out,” said Kasaravalli as reported by Punekarnews.
Seer of Contemporary History: Girish Kasaravalli and his Cinema is the ninth book written in English about the filmmaker.
The filmmaker also said that he came to the city of Pune 50 years ago to write the entrance exam of Film and Television Institute of India and that he feels honoured that the same city has written a book about him.
Born in Shimoga, Karnataka in 1950, Kasaravalli graduated from FTII Pune in 1975, with a specialisation in film direction. Ghatashraddha, his first film as an independent director in 1977, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.
Having won 14 National Film Awards in his career, Kasaravalli is also considered as one of the pioneers of the Parallel Cinema of New Indian Cinema movement.
Tabarana Kathe, Bannada Vesha, Mane, Kraurya, Thaayi Saheba, Dweepa, Hasina, Gulabi Talkies and Kanasemba Kudureyaneri are some of his other films that have won the National Film Awards.
A recipient of the Padma Shri, the book on the filmmaker was also released at the 13th edition of the Bengaluru International Film Festival on Sunday.
