2020's Oscar-winning film The Father, featuring Anthony Hopkins in the lead role, is finally slated for an Indian release. The movie is going to premiere on an OTT platform exclusively.

The movie, which won the Best Adapted Screenplay award at the 94th Academy Awards, will be released in India through the Lionsgate Play app. This comes as no surprise, considering that the film was distributed by Lionsgate in the United Kingdom.

The Father, also starring Olivia Colman as the female lead, will premiere in India on Friday, September 3. She plays the role of Anthony's daughter in the movie.

The film is based on director Florian Zeller's own play Le Pere, which was released in 2012. Interestingly, The Father is the second adaptation of the play after Floride, which was released in 2015. The story of the film follows an old man who deals with dementia. The psychological drama is a complex story that gets you to empathize with the lead character Anthony (Anthony Hopkins). Anthony was honoured with the Best Actor award at the Oscars for his commendable performance.

The Father also stars Imogen Poots as Laura, Rufus Sewell as Paul, Olivia Williams as Catherine, Mark Gatiss as Bill, Evie Wray as Lucy and Ayesha Dharker as Dr. Sarai. The film was completely shot in London. It started filming in May 2019 and wrapped up, ready for release before the world shut down post the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While The Father was distributed by Lionsgate in the UK, it was distributed by Sony Pictures in the United States. The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020. It was released in India on April 23, 2021 and will now be available for the Indian audience on the OTT platform from September 3.
