One of the most prestigious awards of cinematic history, Oscars 2024 has dropped its nomination shortlist in 10 categories. Though Barbie remains the top contender, the underdog films nearly catch up.
The Oscars 2024 shortlists are here, with nominations for each category, ranging from films like Maestro and Poor Things to Elemental and Saltburn. Since its origin in 1929, every year the Awards appreciate and highlight the best films, music, documentaries, and artists for their extraordinary contribution to Cinema, and this year is no different.
The nominations were dropped on December 21, 2023. Also known as The Academy Awards, nomination voting will be done between January 11 to 18, 2024. The official nominations will be disclosed on January 23 and its voting period will run from Feb 22-27. As for the ceremony, the 96th annual Academy Awards will occur on March 10 in Beverly Hills and will be hosted by fourth-time returnee, emcee Jimmy Kimmel.
The 10 categories declared are Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects. Among the top contenders this year are Barbie, with five nominations in its bag. Followed by that are Killers of the Flower Moon with four nominations, while Oppenheimer stands at three.
However, while films like Maestro and Poor Things have done well for themselves, despite the former failing to get a musical nomination, at two and three respectively. The Indian entry for International Feature Film Everyone is a Hero, a Malayalam movie by Torvino Thomas failed to make the list as well. But this year nominations were also kind to several deserving, underrated films, that got nominated.
Films like Elemental, Ferrari, Rebel Moon, Saltburn, Godzilla Minus One, and more get nominated, not once but multiple times, for their merit. Society of the Snow, a new, more authentic take on the 1972 Andes plane crash, has bagged four nominations this year, in Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, and International Feature Film, leaving Oppenheimer, the box office bandit, in the dust. The underdog overachiever will stream on Netflix in January 2024.
Among animated ventures, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has topped the list with three nominations in Visual Effects, Original Score, and Original Song, tying place with Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and The Color Purple. This appreciated but still underrated flick is available for rent on Prime Video.
Oppenheimer itself bagged Sound, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Original Score, so far not an impressive haul for a film that was competing with Barbie, this year’s top contender for most Oscars.
