Both films were nominated in multiple categories but failed to win a single award
SS Rajamouli must be basking in Oscar glory after the song Naatu Naatu from RRR bagged the Best Original Song Award at the Academy Awards. The song's composer M Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose accepted the award on the stage. However, the film failed to bag a single award at the Asian Film Awards at Hong Kong. RRR was nominated in the Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Categories. The film's plot revolves around two real-life Indian rebels, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, and their battle against the British empire. The star cast includes Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt to name a few.
After winning the Oscars, RRR actor Ram Charan shared a long note on his Twitter handle, which read, “We have won!! We have won as Indian Cinema!! We won as a country!! The Oscar Award is coming home!” He added, "RRR is and will always remain as the most special film of our lives and of Indian Cinema history. I can’t thank everyone enough for manifesting the Oscar Award. It still feels like I am living in a dream."
In the meantime, Mani Ratnam's magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, which got nominated in six categories, namely Best Film, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Music, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design, failed to bag a single award, too. The awards ceremony was attended by filmmaker Siva Ananth, the film's cinematographer Ravi Varman, editor Sreekar Prasad, costume designer Eka Lakhani, and Lyca Productions' GKM Tamil Kumaran.
Ponniyin Selvan is an adaptation of the book of the same name penned by Kalki. The plot revolves around the battle for the Chola throne and features Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha and Jayam Ravi in the lead. The five-part book has been adapted into a two-part movie. The second instalment is all set to hit screens on April 28 this summer.
