It will start production later this year and premiere on Prime Video.
Ariana DeBose will star in Prime Video and Blumhouse's psychological thriller House of Spoils. Blow the Man Down filmmakers Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy are behind the film, which is based on their original idea, according to the entertainment website Variety.
DeBose, who won an Oscar for best-supporting actress for her role in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story earlier this year, will play an ambitious chef who opens her first restaurant—a farm-to-table affair on a remote estate—where she battles kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, and crushing self-doubt. But the pressure mounts as the estate's previous owner's powerful spirit threatens to sabotage her at every turn.
The film is described as a "tense, psychological, and sensual thriller that will leave hearts pounding and mouths watering." It will start production later this year and premiere on Prime Video. Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy will direct the project from their script.
The movie will be produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse; Alex Scharfman, Lucas Joaquin, and Drew Houpt for Secret Engine; and Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath for Divide/Conquer. Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold of Blumhouse Television will serve as executive producers.
DeBose, who was born and raised in North Carolina, began taking dance lessons at the age of three and became obsessed with Madonna's Vogue and Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation music videos.
Her first big break came when she was 18 and made it to the final 20 of the reality show So You Think You Can Dance. "It was my first real taste of what showbiz was all about... And when my time on the show ended abruptly, it was a setback; a very public rejection. However, the experience taught me that what others think of me does not define me," DeBose told Elle.
In the interview with Vanity Fair, DeBose said she knew that to be taken seriously as a triple threat; dancer, singer, and actor, she would have to "go in and sing just as well as the singers who move."
