Oscar 2024 – Oppenheimer snubbed from visual effects category; Barbie, Aquaman 2, Spider-Verse and 17 more still in the race

We are officially at the end of 2023 and in that part of the year where the euphoria for the most prestigious night for world cinema begins. We are exactly three months away from The Academy Awards aka Oscars 2024 and the build-up for the same has already begun. While the actors prepare their speeches and what to wear, the management is busy sorting out the nominations. The latest reports talk about the Visual Effects Category and it turns out Oppenheimer doesn’t have a place even among the top 20 contenders.

Oscars 2024 committee is about to have a tough time after easing down half a decade. 2023 has some of the biggest filmmakers churning out some of their most aspirational and ambitious movies. There was Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and many more having released their Magnum Opuses in the same year. So now when the visual effects finalist list is out you expect to see them all. While Barbie and The Killers Of The Flower Moon are indeed on the list, Oppenheimer is missing.

While the snub might not be welcomed by Christopher Nolan fans, one reason for the movie not to be on this list could also be the fact that the visual effects used in the Cillian Murphy starrer could be less than the ones that have made the cut. The limited use of VFX was a highlight point of Oppenheimer’s campaign.
