Oppenheimer: Drake and Josh star Josh Peck joins star-studded cast of Christopher Nolan's World War II epic

The film, backed by Universal Pictures, is based on the life and work of American physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, most well known for his work that led to the development of the atomic bomb.

Josh Peck, best recognised for his role in the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh has boarded the cast of Christopher Nolan's upcoming historical drama Oppenheimer.

Peck will play Kenneth Bainbridge, among the many scientists who were involved in the Manhattan Project, the American government program during World War II that developed the first nuclear weapons, according to Variety.

The titular role will be emulated by Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, who has previously worked with Nolan on films like the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Dunkirk.

Other members of the cast are Emily Blunt as biologist and botanist Kitty Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as Manhattan Project director Leslie Groves Jr and Robert Downey Jr as founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Lewis Strauss.

Oppenheimer will mark Downey Jr.’s first time collaborating with the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker. Damon had previously been a part of Nolan’s science fiction epic, Interstellar.

The cast includes more than its fair share of stellar supporting actors including Florence Pugh (psychiatrist Jean Tatlock), Benny Safdie (theoretical physicist Edward Teller) and Josh Hartnett (American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence).

Rami Malek, This Is Us actor Michael Angarano, Solo: A Star Wars Story actor Alden Ehrenreich, Kenneth Branagh and Matthew Modine round up the cast.
