Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, has been receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences alike for its gripping portrayal of the historical drama. The film, which released on July 21, has been performing well at the box office in India and abroad. The film has collected around Rs 71 crore in India till Tuesday, July 27. It is expected to cross the Rs 80 crore mark by Wednesday.

Oppenheimer is based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's Pulitzer Prize–winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. It follows the life and career of Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project that developed the first nuclear weapons during World War II. The film also explores his personal and political conflicts, as well as his involvement in the Cold War. The film has a stellar ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, Jessica Chastain, Benedict Cumberbatch, John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, and Anne Hathaway.

The film has received acclaim for its direction, screenplay, cinematography, music, and performances. The film has also been praised for its historical accuracy and relevance to the current global scenario.

Oppenheimer has also been a huge success at the international box office, where it has collected $174 million (Rs 142.54 crore) worldwide till Monday, July 24. It is one of the highest-grossing films of 2023 and Nolan's second-biggest opening after Tenet ($200 million). The film faced tough competition from Greta Gerwig's Barbie, which also released on July 21. However, Oppenheimer managed to hold its own in most of the markets and emerged as a strong contender for the weekend.

The top international markets for Oppenheimer are the U.K. ($9.3 million), India ($7 million), France ($6.4 million), Germany ($6.4 million), China ($5.8 million), Japan ($5.6 million), and Australia ($5.2 million). The film is yet to release in Russia and South Korea.

Oppenheimer is expected to sustain its momentum at the box office in the coming days and weeks as it has positive word-of-mouth and critical buzz. The film has also been generating Oscar buzz for its technical and artistic merits. However, in India, the film will now face a tough competition by Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which released in cinema halls today.
