This Onam holiday brought much-needed respite to the Kerala distributors and the exhibitors, all thanks to three new Malayalam releases: King of Kotha, RDX and Ramachandra Boss & Co. The new releases added to an already ongoing momentum at the box office that was ushered in by Superstar Rajinikanth's latest blockbuster Jailer.

While Jailer remains one of the top choices at the box office, the three new Malayalam movies kept the cash registers ringing as the Malayalis celebrated Onam on Tuesday. Each movie was different from the other and they catered to the different interests and tastes of the movie-going audience. If the fans wanted to see a complex narrative about the rise of a gangster set in a different period, there was King of Kotha. If they were in the mood for a neat comedy headlined by a popular star, there was Ramachandra Boss & Co. Or if they aspired for an explosive narrative filled with youthful vigour and taut, they had RDX. The Malayali audiences were spoiled for choices this Onam holiday, bringing much-needed cheers to the theatres in the state.

King of Kotha vs RDX vs Ramachandra Boss & Co: Who's the real Onam winner?

This is how much King of Koth has earned so far

Helmed by Abilash Joshiy, King of Kotha was a very ambitious movie in Dulquer Salmaan's career. Besides playing the lead role, Dulqer also bankrolled the movie under his home production banner Wayfarer Films. And he spearheaded an excellent marketing strategy, setting a new benchmark for Malayalam cinema when it comes to promotions.

King of Kotha opened on August 24 to packed houses amid a lot of fanfare. However, the varied reviews affected the movie's performance at the box office. Despite mixed talks, the movie has managed to put up a good show, emerging as one of the hits of this year.

According to reports, in six days, the movie has raked in more than Rs 33 crore from its worldwide ticket sales. And it's also said to be showing strong signs of revival at the box office and the trade expects the movie to sustain for a few more weeks in the cinemas.

RDX exploded at the box office

Debutant director Nahas Hidayath's RDX was the biggest winner this Onam season. The movie had a limited release as it was overshadowed by Dulquer's King of Kotha and Nivin Pauly's Ramachandra Boss & Co. Not to mention, the relatively small-budget movie also had to vie for screen count and attention with the gigantic Jailer.

However, RDX showed once again that there was always a market for good content. The movie, starring Shane Nigam, Neeraj Madhav and Antony Varghese, became the top movie at the Kerala box office. And in five days after its release, RDX has earned more than Rs 23 crore in ticket sales.

RDX is receiving glowing reviews from people across the country and is likely to boost its performance at the box office in the coming days.

Ramachandra Boss & Co was a disappointment

Ramachandra Boss & Co was not the break Nivin Pauly's career was needed. It didn't meet expectations both in terms of critical and commercial success. Helmed by Haneef Adeni, the movie also stars Vinay Forrt, Jaffar Idukki, Mamitha Baiju, Aarsha Chandini Baiju, Vijilesh and Sreenath Babu.
