On Women’s Day, A Thursday star Yami Gautam pens open letter asking to help end sexual violence

The actress also mentioned that playing Naina Jaiswal, her character in the film, helped her understand the ‘mental trauma’, victims have to go through

Yami Gautam addressed a very important and tragic issue facing the country through her film, A Thursday. On International Women’s Day today, the actress decided to get a conversation started around the horrific sexual violence, many women in the country are subjected to.

Gautam took to Instagram to pen a note about the same, which she called ‘a humble appeal to help end sexual violence’. In it, she talked about how every day she gets to read about different instances of sexual violence perpetuated against women in India. She pointed to how women’s oppressions have been normalised, and how some even equate such acts of violence to be caused due to women’s own actions. Through her role in A Thusday, Gautam said that she was able to understand the mental agony and trauma survivors go through, and that the issue should be addressed by the country as a whole.

She said she hoped that this year would be a milestone to create a better and safer world, and that the country’s citizens should come together to achieve it.

In A Thursday, Gautam’s character named Naina Jaiswal is revealed to be a victim of sexual violence when she was younger, leading her to take drastic steps to exact revenge and make her story known. Written and directed by Behzad Khambata, the film also features Neha Dhupia, Atul Kulkarni, Dimple Kapadia, Karanvir Sharma, Maya Sarao, Kalyanee Mulay and Boloram Das. RSVP Movies and Blue Monkey Films have produced the film.
