At a time when film producers are claiming that OTT platforms aren’t interested in Malayalam films before their theatrical releases, the makers of Kunchacko Boban’s Officer On Duty have managed to sell its streaming rights to Netflix. The makers or the industry insiders are yet to reveal the sum that the OTT rights of the film has been sold.

The movie, which is directed by debutant Jithu Ashraf and scripted by Shahi Kabir, released in theatres on February 20. Apart from Kunchacko, who plays the lead role of demoted circle inspector, the film also has Jagadish, Vishak Nair, Priya Mani, Manoj KU, Unni Lalu and Ramzan Muhammed in pivotal roles.

Incidentally, the previous two cop films, which were produced by Martin Prakkat Films – Nayattu and Iratta, are also streaming on Netflix. Officer On Duty marks Kunchacko’s second collaboration with the production company and scriptwriter Shahi Kabir. He had earlier teamed up with them for the acclaimed film Nayattu, which also had Joju George and Nimisha Sajayan.

Judging from the previous releases of the platform, you can expect Officer On Duty to drop on Netflix by March 20, 2025. Netflix’s previous Malayalam release was Rifle Club, which hit the platform exactly a month after its theatrical release.

Reasons to watch Officer On Duty in theatres

That said, there’s are valid reasons why fans must catch this gripping thriller in theatres. The movie, which revolves around an investigation carried out by a cop who is battling his own demons, progresses at break-neck speed and is led by compelling performances by its lead cast, especially Kunchacko.

The movie’s action sequences along with Jakes Bejoy’s thumping music are best enjoyed in cinema halls, and these further elevate the thriller.
