Not axing 90% India content; Netflix calls reports untrue and adds that several shows are returning for new seasons

The streaming giant was responding to reports that claimed that its recent share and subscription drop had a ripple effect on its content buckets across the globe, including India.

Not axing 90% India content; Netflix calls reports untrue and adds that several shows are returning for new seasons

Shefali Shah's Delhi Crime Season 2 is in the works, but is rumoured to be undergoing massive changes

Late last evening, reports emerged that as part of its measures to stem the fallout of its recent massive share and subscription drop, streaming giant Netflix was extending the global axing of several shows and movies to its India content bucket as well. A report citing a well-placed source claimed that as much as 90% of Netflix’s India content would be affected by the move, as the streaming platform looks for means to adopt a more commercial approach to its operations.

Netflix later offered a clarification on what’s actually going on, stating that the report, which originally appeared in Bollywoodlife and was picked up by several others subsequently, was far from the truth. “This story is untrue. Some of our upcoming titles include Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan Kapoor starrer, Thar, Vishal Bhardwaj's Khufiya and the returning seasons of Delhi Crime, Masaba Masaba, She and many more,” is the quote that’s been shared by the team. The Netflix team also claims that no Indian show is getting the axe.

This should come as good news to the Indian showrunners of titles that are under production or had only a one season outing yet. Internationally, this year, so far, Netflix has already cancelled Another Life, Archive 81, The Baby-Sitters Club, Bone, Bright 2, Cooking with Paris, Diablero, Fast & Loose, Gentefied, On the Verge and Toil &Trouble, among others. It has been reported that the platform axed some shows despite a favourable fan following, like, Tuca & Bertie, One Day at a Time, Sense8, Lady Dynamite, I Am Not OK With This, Teenage Bounty Hunters, Turn up Charlie and Cowboy Bebop.
