The period drama, which is helmed by Rajeev Ravi, has already deferred its release date thrice
The journey to theatres hasn’t been a smooth sailing for Nivin Pauly’s Thuramukham. The Rajeev Ravi directorial, which had completed shoot before the pandemic has deferred its release date thrice already and it seems it might be pushed again, with the producers yet to confirm if the film will hit theatres on June 10.
The movie was initially set for an April 2020 release, but this was shifted due to the nationwide pandemic lockdown. After theatres in Kerala reopened in February 2021, the makers announced the movie as an Eid 2021 release but this again fell through after the government declared the second lockdown due to the rising COVID-19 cases in the country.
This prompted the makers to then announce a January 20 release date. But this got dashed after the movie ran into problems, with its former distributors filing a case against the producers. This could have also proved to be a blessing in disguise, considering that the State was grappling with Omicron during the month too.
Last month, June 3 was confirmed by its cast and crew. But closer to release, the team let the viewers know that the movie has been pushed by another week due to legal issues and promised that despite the challenges, the movie will release in theatres. Now, with June 10 fast approaching, news from the industry is that the release date of the movie could once again be deferred, with the producers yet to take a final call.
The period film, which is set in the 1940s and 1950s, revolves around the chappa system and uprising by the workers of Cochin Harbour to abolish the system where labourers had to fight among themselves to snatch a coin that would give them the right to work.
Apart from Nivin Pauly, the film also has Joju George, Indrajith Sukumaran, Darshana Rajendran, Poornima Indrajith, Arjun Ashokan, Nimisha Sajayan and Sudev Nair in pivotal roles.
