Nitesh Tiwari on Abhishek Sinha directing Tumse Na Ho Payega: ‘He understands the writers’ vision’

Known for making films like Chhichhore, Dangal, Chillar Party and Nil Battey Sannata director Nitesh Tiwari’s recent venture Bawaal - starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor - got embroiled in controversy for ‘trivialising holocaust’. The filmmaker is now gearing up for his next release Tumse Na Ho Payega, with Ishwak Singh in the lead. In a recent interview, Nitesh spoke about his style of storytelling and why he prefers collaborating with like-minded people.

Why Nitesh Tiwari decided not to direct Tumse Na Ho Payega

Commenting on Tumse Na Ho Payega, the director told The Indian Express that the idea of the film came from his wife, filmmaker Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, who saw the potential of it being a good script. The story is inspired by Varun Agarwal’s novel How I Braved Anu Aunty and Co-Founded a Million Dollar Company. Nitesh worked on the script of the film along with writer Nikhil Mehrotra.

According to Nitesh, Tumse Na Ho Payega had a similar feel to his 2019 film Chhichhore, which is why he refrained from directing the movie himself and instead collaborated with filmmaker Abhishek Sinha. Nitesh said that he wanted to work with a director who understands the vision of the writers. “It is very important for me that the director understands and believes in the vision of the writers and Abhishek was the right candidate,” he elaborated.

Nitesh on the Bawaal controversy

During the interview, Nitesh also expressed his perspective on handling criticism while addressing the controversy surrounding his last film Bawaal. He acknowledged that not everyone will appreciate his creative works and emphasised on the importance of learning from positive and negative feedback. He believes receiving criticism is a part of the creative journey and considers it a blessing rather than a setback.

Released earlier this year, Bawaal is a romantic drama film that follows Ajju (Varun) who marries Nisha (Janhvi) and takes her on a trip of Europe, reliving the horrors of the holocaust. The scenes involving references to holocaust caused a stir, with many describing it as ‘trivialisation of holocaust’.

Tumse Na Ho Payega marks the directorial debut of Abhishek Sinha. The story revolves around the bonding that two friends share and the challenges they face. Apart from Ishwak, the movie also stars Mahima Makwana and Gaurav Pandey, among others. It is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
